How Can You Be Reminded Of & Declare Who You Are?

Share Article

Have you ever found yourself in a season when answering the question who are you? seems more challenging than at other times in your life?

Who are you? Are you your job title, relationship status, number of social media followers, accomplishments, or the number in your bank account? Or… is your identity defined by something or someone else entirely?

Perhaps your Becoming Story isn’t unpacking how you thought, hoped, dreamed and planned. Maybe you’re in the thick of fighting the lies of comparison, depression, anxiety, or disappointment. Wherever you find yourself today, if you’re stumbling in defining who are you? my hope is that the words on this screen serve as a reminder to your warrior heart of who God has uniquely, perfectly and beautifully designed you to be… and that you’re reminded you’re not alone.

Years ago, embracing the word “becoming” as my life anthem and battle cry, I never could have imagined how multi-faceted this journey truly is. At the start, I thought “becoming me” was about setting goals, growing in and towards those goals, and becoming what you had set out to be and do. Now, I’m discovering the layers of becoming, the deep warrior work required to grow, changing seasons, and new chapters.

Becoming has never been about reaching a destination. As I’m now learning, it’s about discovering who you are… who God designed you to be.

I find myself in a season that looks differently than I planned when I set out on this becoming journey. When life doesn’t go as we planned, it’s far too easy to begin doubting who we are. So when you find yourself in changing seasons, in waiting seasons, in chapters that aren’t what you thought they would be, how can you be reminded of who you are? How can you declare who you are, answering the question who are you? with confidence? Here’s what God is teaching me in this chapter of my Becoming Story:

First, spend time with your Creator. Who you are is ALWAYS found in WHOSE you are. Read your Bible, talk with God, journal… spend time getting to know God!

I love how James 4:7-10 in The Message Translation invites us to discover who we are by knowing Whose we are: “So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him make himself scarce. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet.”

Second, invite a trusted person(s) to remind you of who you are. Sometimes someone else’s perspective is a much needed reminder of who you are and who God designed you to be. Recently, my warrior Daddy sent me these photos from an event I spoke at a few years ago, reminding me of who God designed me to be: “Look at this warrior chick!” My Daddy reminded me that I AM a warrior, a communicator, a storyteller, and a cheerleader lacing up her warrior boots to equip, encourage and empower others to become who God made them to be, too.

Third, ask yourself what your best future possible self looks like. This week, I attended the Live2Lead 2021 Conference at Church of Hope, and author and speaker, Valorie Burton, equipped us with a powerful becoming journaling prompt saying, “Write about the best possible version of you in the present tense, in ‘I am’ statements.” For example, rather than writing “I hope to be a warrior,” write “I am a warrior.” Declaring who we are in the present tense invites us to lace up our warrior boots confidently, stepping into who we are!

Fourth, take note of how God is speaking and reminding you of who He designed you to be. As Valorie Burton equipped us with the “I am” statements coaching, I remembered the photos my warrior Daddy had sent me days earlier… from an event called, “I Am,” focused on equipping people to be who God made them to be… in a split-second moment, God reminded me again of who He designed me to be… who I am. I believe God is speaking and both reminding us and inviting us to be who He designed us to be… we just have to open our eyes and ears, and look and listen to what He is saying.

Warrior friend, there will be days and seasons when answering the question who are you? will feel more challenging. Remember this: even in uncertain seasons, who you are is certain in Christ. Your identity in Him doesn’t change. When we have a relationship with God, we are adopted as His children, and we have hope in Christ for all eternity. If you don’t have a relationship with God, email me. I’d be honored to introduce you.

How would I answer the question who are you?

I am a daughter of the King.

I am becoming.

I am a warrior.

I am a kind and loving daughter, sister, friend, and teammate.

I am a writer, communicator, storyteller, and cheerleader who empowers, encourages and equips others to become who God made them to be, too.

I am loved by God, accepted, forgiven, whole, and made with purpose, for purpose.

Warrior friend, who are you? Spend some time today reflecting, talking with God, and marking your “I am” statements. And when you stumble, remember who you are is rooted in WHOSE you are. Your identity IS secure in Him. And that’s a truth we can remember and declare with confidence no matter what we experience on this becoming journey.

Cheering you on big time as you’re becoming who God made you to be!
