Something that has been so important in my relationship with Jesus lately is realizing my self-worth. Sounds pretty easy, right?
Well, it’s a lot easier said than done in my opinion. So many times, I leave space for the Devil to crawl in and remind me of my insecurities. “Anna, you don’t dress nice enough.” “Anna, you don’t have the right things to say.” “Anna, why in the world do you keep trying?”
I seem to leave enough room in my brain for these thoughts to enter and sure enough, it feels like they’ll never leave. My behavior starts to take shape because of the mindset I have.
I stop trying as hard as I usually do. I stop doing things I know I’m good at, because the negative thoughts consume me. I start to act like someone else. I stop being myself.
Does this sound familiar in your own life? Here’s the beautiful part: Jesus reminds us that we are always more than enough.
A lot of times—I know it is so true for myself—we tend to focus on the outer chaos of our lives instead of the chaos that lives in us. Part of this inner chaos is the way we view our self-worth. This spring, let’s challenge ourselves to inhale the truth. There is one place we can find it that stands true time and time again: the Bible.
Now, I pray that I’m not the only one to admit the struggle of not valuing myself. It’s a lot easier when we’re able to work through these things together. We can point each other back in the direction of scripture.
When it comes to self-worth, inner and outer beauty, and respecting ourselves, Jesus urges us to remember that He created us:
“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” Psalm 139:14 (ESV)
Ladies, the Creator of Earth made you just as perfect as you can be. You are His masterpiece. You are fearfully and wonderfully made—all of you. Every single part, gift, hair on your head.
“Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.” Psalm 100:3 (ESV)
The Lord, God, claims you. He got to choose from everything He could have possibly created and He chose us—His people—out of love. And you know what? He loves you enough to do it again and again.
“Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.” 1 Peter 3:3-4 (ESV)
Hear this: God created you with the most beautiful spirit. There’s a reason we’re all different. He created each of us uniquely out of love. Outward beauty comes from the joy of Christ. He calls you precious.
Spring cleaning involves spring cleaning of the soul, too. We have to be ready to rid ourselves of the lies the Devil works into our hearts. Let’s inhale the truth of the Bible, y’all: we were perfectly made.
Never doubt your self-worth. God made you, rockstar. He made you perfectly.
