OK, so I absolutely love the movie Princess Diaries! Mia Thermopolis is your average teenage girl. She goes to school everyday and feels unnoticed. She thinks her only future plans are college and trying to find the right career. But then the unthinkable happens–Her Grandmother comes to town. Her Grandmother happens to be the Queen of Genovia and when she comes to town it is a BIG deal! Queen Clarisse sits Mia down and tells her that she is a princess and she gets to take over the kingdom. Well, needless to say, Mia is absolutely shocked! Throughout the course of the movie Mia is completely transformed. One of my favorite scenes is the makeover scene. Paolo, the hairdresser, transforms Mia into a gorgeous princess. She changes from the awkward, pimple-fighting, frizzy-haired teenager into an elegant princess of Genovia.
It is so much fun to dream about princesses, tiaras, ball gowns, and super hott princes. Sadly, we leave these dreams simply as dreams. We don’t realize that we live in a true fairy tale. OK, I can hear you saying, “Emily, we live in the 21st century. We do not live in fairy tale land. Get back to reality.” Well, I was talking about reality! We are princesses! God is the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords. As His daughters, we are royal princesses. Sure, we aren’t walking around in a pink ball gown dripping with diamonds, but we do walk around with our character. Do you act like a princess? Do you carry yourself with poise and dignity? When Mia went to her princess lessons, she had to learn how to carry herself. Before, she walked around with humped shoulders and not one ounce of confidence. Once she learned who she really was–a princess–she walked with her head held high!
God calls us to set an example for others. Like this week’s verse (1 Timothy 4:12) says, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” A princess sets the standard.
What standards are you setting today?
Once Mia accepted her position as Princess of Genovia, she wasn’t just Mia Thermopolis anymore. She was Mia Minuet Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia. Do you want to stay as you are or become a Princess of God? For me, I don’t just want to be Emily Cummins. I want to be Emily Cummins, Princess of the King of Kings–Jesus Christ!
