How Do You Know He’s The One?

Share Article

I met God’s best for me while I was wearing yoga pants. I can’t remember what we talked about, only that I felt intensely disoriented when someone interrupted us. I would describe it as a feeling similar to being underwater, swimming along without much effort, only to pop my head up and realize that a surprisingly strong current had carried me out to sea.

Even now, I don’t think of my husband as “The One.” To me, that is such an insignificant word to describe such an enormous gift from God. The man I married is not a single thing. He’s an intricate mosaic—made up pieces of every sincere conversation I ever shared to God.

“The One” is a myth, but God’s best is a reality. How can we know the difference?

God is so generous. When He gave us Scripture, He gave us the map by which we find true love. God tells us that love feels like spring, when “The winter is past; the rains are over and gone.” – Song of Solomon 2:11.

Meeting my husband felt exactly that way. His kindness brought so much unexpected warmth to my life, and falling in love with him was marked by the most incredible feeling of ease and peace. I knew he was the person God intended for me when my love for the Lord strengthened because of our relationship. We encourage one another to seek Him, because we know that by seeking Him we find each other, again and again.

That, I think, is what God meant when He told us that love “rejoices in truth and is not self-seeking” (1 Cor. 13:4-8).

God also tells us that “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.” (Romans 12:9-10)

You’ll know you’ve met the right person when the thought of their happiness becomes more dear to you than your own. There is no such thing as a bad day when my husband smiles. His dreams have become so sincerely precious to me. And the best part? I know, deep in my soul, that he feels exactly the same way about me.

More than anything, God showed us what true love looks and feels like in the form of Jesus. There are plenty of times over the past year when I’ve failed to love my husband the way he deserves. Thank goodness I have Jesus’ example to turn to, over and over again, when I lose my way. His love is persistent. He pursues us. He is dedicated to showing us how dear we are to Him, in both His Word and His deeds.

Loving the right person should feel that way. It will bring you so much joy, even in the tough moments.
