Is There A Purpose In Singleness?

What’s the purpose in singleness? Is there a purpose?

Being single means being alone. Or at least, that’s how most single 25 year old women see it. But I see it as a movie starring just me; an adventure that I am leading; a life where I get to make all of the decisions, do only what I want, and hog all of the blankets and the entire bed to myself.

But is there a reason for singleness? Is there a purpose? 1 Corinthians 7:32-34 says, “An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord. But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife—and his interests are divided.” Paul writes in 1 Corinthians to remind us that singleness is a time for us to grow closer to God and to strengthen our faith. With the strength in God, and a firm relationship with Him, the strength of a relationship can only be stronger. Being strong in our faith as a single person can only help build the blocks to create an even stronger faith-based relationship.

One of the hardest parts of being single is remembering that God not only has a plan, but that He has the perfect person out there for you, and that He won’t forsake you.

With a relationship with God, you are never alone. Being single does not mean that you are alone, as Joshua 1:9 reminds us, “God is with you—wherever you may go and no matter what life brings you.”

He is with you always.

I like to think that the purpose of singleness is twofold:

1. To draw nearer to God. To strengthen your relationship with Him, which will allow for a strong foundation to build a lifelong relationship on once you have found the one which God create for you.

2. To learn who you are as an individual.

One of the biggest lessons I have learned having observed my friends in and out of relationships is that a steady understanding of who they are outside of a relationship is vital to the success of a relationship. I saw so many of my friends struggle in relationships in their early 20s because they could only find their identity in their relationship.

Without a solid foundation of one’s identity as a single person, it is hard to define your identity within a relationship. It is not always easy being single, but experiencing life as a single woman is important to the health of your future relationship.
