Dear Future Husband

Share Article

I don’t know your name.
I don’t know what your hair color is or what makes you smile.
I don’t know what makes you laugh until you cry.
I don’t know what your dreams are or what your deepest fears are.
I don’t know what your favorite food is.
I don’t know what irritates you or makes you angry.
I don’t know the sound of your laugh or if you’re a country music kinda guy.
I don’t know you.

I don’t know you, but I feel like I do.

Because here’s what I do know:
I know you love Jesus with every fiber in your being.
I know you’re chasing after becoming the man God created you to be.
I know you’re not perfect.
I know you’ll never complete me because no human ever will.
I know you’ll be my biggest cheerleader in my own becoming journey.

With what I know about you and the man you’re becoming—and what I know about me and the woman I’m becoming—here’s my prayer, my commitment, my promise:

I will wait for you.
I will pray for you daily.
I will cheer you on, encourage and support you.
I won’t compete with you, but will complement you.
I will love you fully, passionately and unconditionally.
When the tough stuff comes—and it will—I won’t give up or quit.
I won’t be perfect because I’m human, but I’ll bring my best every day

You know what I believe to be true? We are both becoming, we’re discovering who we are and who we want to be. We’re waking up to what it is that God made us for, the passions He birthed inside us, the voice He gave to each of us. And I believe that we’re going to be a good team, in the right time. When we’re ready. When our stories are woven together to create something stronger, something bigger than anything we could ever attempt to accomplish on our own.

Song of Solomon 8:4 says, “Don’t excite love, don’t stir it up, until the time is ripe—and you’re ready.” I don’t know you, but I know the beat of your heart. And I’m not going to rush it. I’m not going to wish for a faster timetable or speed up the process. Because I value you more than that. I value who you’re becoming in the process. And I value who I’m becoming in the process too.

Until we meet, know this: a girl named Emily already loves you so, so much.
