My God can do anything.
“If you want to give it all you’ve got,” Jesus replied, “go sell your possessions, give everything to the poor. All your wealth will then be in Heaven. Then come follow me.” That was the last thing the young man expected to hear. And so, crest-fallen, he walked away. He was holding on tight to a lot of things, and he couldn’t bear to let go. Jesus looked hard at them and said, “No chance at all if you think you can pull it off yourself. Every chance in the world if you trust God to do it.”
Do you remember hearing this story in your kindergarten Sunday school class like ages ago? The point was always about giving up everything for Jesus–totally true; however, I have a little different take on these verses. This young man was asking Jesus what he had to do in order to follow Him. Jesus said to give it all you’ve got, meaning giving Jesus the steering wheel. This story is not about literally packing up your room, selling your possessions, and standing on the side of the road collecting money for the poor. It is about releasing everything you’ve got to Jesus. The root of that is in my heart. I need to give Jesus complete control of my heart. This is a daily process–if not a minutely process! It is so easy to catch myself thinking about what I want or what my needs are, but then I have to re-focus my thoughts back to what Jesus wants. So, back to the story, what did the young man do? He was afraid to release control to Jesus so he walked away. I am afraid that’s far too easy to do. We tend to follow those “me” thoughts and completely forget to walk straight into the throne room of Jesus and lay the pieces of our lives before Him. Psalm 18:20 says, “God made my life complete when I placed all the pieces before Him.” Our lives will never be complete until we give Jesus control. Period. End of story. In fact, after the disciples saw the young man walk away sad they asked Jesus about it. Jesus flat-out told them that they only had a chance at making a difference and living as a Christ-follower if they would simply trust God to do it. Do it…..anything. Let’s be honest here, there is nothing my God cannot do. Should be repeat that again? There is nothing my God cannot do! Do you believe that? What do you need to Jesus to do in your life right now? For me, I need Him to heal me. I have been extremely sick this past weekend and I am tired of having a raw throat and sounding like I have a guy’s voice! I need the hand of God to come down and heal me! So, how can that happen?
1. I have to give it all I’ve got
2. I have to lay the pieces of my life before Him
3. I have to trust God to do it
There is nothing my God cannot do. There is nothing my God cannot do.
